As you may know, Santa Clara Community Foundation is stewarding the Hileman Landing natural area in partnership with local community members and Lane County. Tim created a little video vignette of some features of the park and our activities. As the season continues we’ll create more of these. Please let us know if you have any images to share at hileman@santaclaracommunityfoundation.org.
Join us on the last Saturday of each month for work party and walk-about activities. People can sign up here to get notified of various Foundation volunteer events.
Hileman Landing County Park is in the Santa Clara neighborhood located north of Eugene at the end of Hileman Lane, off E. Beacon Drive. Come visit for walking, birding, fishing, river-watching, wildflowers and other activities in this great natural area just north of town.
Hi,
I’m sure you’re aware but there’s Hemlock growing at Hileman Landing. It requires special removal procedures. I know you guys do monthly clean ups and I wanted to warn you.
Thank you for the comment, Andrea. Yes, we are aware that native water hemlock (likely, Cicuta douglasii) exists at Hileman Landing. Plants of this genus were indeed used to dispatch the ancient Greek philosopher Socrates before his time. Water hemlock is prolific in Oregon, and we point it out to our volunteers if found present where they are working. We do not actively seek to remove it since it is native, but will sometimes cut it away if hindering more preferred native plants. Poisonings are rare, but they have happened in Oregon. If you are a plant forager please be sure you are experienced in identification.
